A Distiller in Wine Country Switches Production to Hand Sanitizer to Help the Community During COVID-19

Visitors to wine country have another way to taste the fruit of those vines in a most unexpected way, at Dillon's.

Local small-batch distiller Dillon’s Unfiltered Gin 22 is a true product of Niagara: grape-based, and enhanced by the flavors of 22 other botanicals. Silky smooth, intriguingly complex, using it, my simple gin and tonic was reborn as a sophisticated summer sipper.

But wait… a grape based gin?

Unfiltered Gin 22 is one of three signature spirits Dillon’s launched when they opened their Niagara-region distillery in 2012, along with their Method 95 Vodka, White Rye, and a line of 6 bitters.

Only a year after opening, all three spirits were awarded medals (bronze, silver, and gold respectively) at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, ‘the highest you can go’ says proud Master Distiller Geoff Dillon, who seems bashful about such rapid success.

Dillon’s is riding the concurrent waves of a cocktail revolution and the local and crafted food movement. But Geoff attributes innovation – a willingness to experiment to make unique products, like gin from grapes instead of grains – to the attention their spirits and bitters are attracting.

That innovation is at the heart of the Dillon’s distillery. Geoff’s father, Peter, is the botanical expert and experimenter. It’s a natural extension for the environmental chemist and life-long ‘foodie’.

Geoff started a career in finance, but then took a fork in the road to attend the esteemed Artisan Distilling Program at Michigan State University and study with whisky distillers in Scotland in preparation for launching Dillon’s.

‘The science of distilling is pretty easy. The art is hard. Every day is an experiment.’

To craft their award-winning spirits, the father-son team combines the benefits of old school pot stills with modern technology – and source the best ingredients.

A Distillery in Wine Country

Niagara – best known for its wine -- was the ‘ideal’ place to launch a small-batch distillery. Fruit, grapes and botanicals can all be sourced locally.

The grapes they distill come from growers who have surplus. Dillon’s and local vintners are mutually supportive in other ways too. There's long-established wine tourism in the Niagara region. Existing local wineries have embraced the 'new kid on the block'. Dillon's and wineries send visitors to each other, and the result is an even richer Niagara wine and spirits experience.

Tasting

With its stylishly designed tasting room and stacks of ageing barrels, Dillon's is right at home among the area’s scenic vineyards. If you drop by for a distillery tour and tasting, you may well get to meet Geoff yourself. He often conducts the tours.

UPDATE, March 2020: DILLON'S GIVES BACK DURING COVID-19

Since the outbreak of the global pandemic, Dillon’s has become even a bigger part of its community.

While its tasting rooms – like Niagara’s other tourist attractions and wineries – remain closed, its stills are working overtime. But not making gin or vodka.

Mid-March, Dillon’s announced on social media, “They're not pretty but they work. We're bottling up some 65% alcohol for disinfecting. Any essential service individual or organization who needs some, reach out, we'll have 1,000+ bottles for tomorrow, on us.” (Top, and below images via Dillon’s facebook page.)

In addition to producing bottles of the optimal percent alcohol for disinfecting, the company has also been making hand sanitizer.

“This has been a wild ride. Since Tuesday’s post we have had thousands of emails, phone calls, messages from every form of front line worker from all across the province. Hospitals, homeless shelters, EMS, police, fire, nursing homes, Dr.’s offices, friends, new friends, family and so many more. We have shed more than a few tears here hearing the stories and are trying our absolute best to help. More than 5,000 bottles have gone to keep these people at least somewhat safer in what they do.

“Currently we have exhausted stockpiles of aloe for hand sanitizer but we have scaled up our disinfectant with the unbelievable generosity of some of our Niagara wine industry friends and their donations of bottles, caps and alcohol.” Other partners, including Volkswagen Canada, have stepped in to help deliver throughout the province.

This family-owned, small-batch distiller has proven that good deeds and love of community multiply.

Why We Still Believe in Travel

While we are all practicing #StaySafeStayHome, it can be hard to stay positive or be optimistic that things we love and used to take for granted will return.

We can’t wait to be able to gather again with family and friends, celebrate holidays, go to concerts and festivals and markets and games… and travel.

Right now, travel may seem distant on the horizon, but this is why we know travel will be part of our lives again.

Travel providers are betting on a return to travel. Rather than throwing in the towel and closing, they are working hard and investing all their available resources into keeping themselves poised to resume providing travel services to travelers when we are ready to pack our bags again.

But even more important than knowledge of the resilience and projections of the travel industry… is an awareness of the human spirit.

From our earliest times in all the world’s civilizations, people have had an instinct to explore the unknown and have new experiences. That inner flame still burns in all of us who love travel. A pandemic does not quench our longing to:

· See with our own eyes a wonder of nature or human design that strikes us with awe;

· Taste a dish where it originated; no matter how many times we’ve sushi or pasta or pad thai at a restaurant at home, eating a dish in its home country always gives us that ‘aha’ moment of finally knowing that this is what it was really meant to taste like;

· Share a slice of untouched land or sea with its wild inhabitants and be touched by an awareness of our own place in the natural world;

· Stare into the endless, mesmerizing view of a ship’s wake as we sail into new waters;

· Meet people whose lives have been devoted to developing and sharing an art or craft or food product or wine or experience that enriches our senses; and

· Learn firsthand the stories of personal journeys of people we meet in other places that increase our understanding of the world beyond ourselves.

When travel returns – and it will return – we hope these difficult days will have given us time to reflect and refocus on what’s truly important.

Hopefully, our biggest lesson will be to be kinder. Kinder at home, and kinder when we travel.

· Kinder to ourselves and, while we must do our best, not to self-judge for things we can’t change;

· Kinder to our loved ones, including making time to spend with them and celebrate our lives together;

· Kinder to the people we meet, the people who show us their hospitality and welcome us into their communities;

· Kinder to the planet, to wildlife, to the environment we all need to survive;

So our primal craving to explore can benefit the people and planet and natural world around us – not destroy it.

We're going to keep sharing stories that keep our travel imagination alive... until we can travel again.

Milan's Shuttered Duomo will Ring with the Voice of an 'Angel' as Bocelli Performs Easter Concert

The COVID-19 pandemic is cancelling Easter celebrations large and small around the world. Thousand-year-old cathedrals will make history as they remain empty and silent.

Enter Andrea Angel Bocelli.

Celine Dion has said that, 'if God has a singing voice, he must sound a lot like Andrea Bocelli.'

The Italian tenor who made pop music audiences fall in love with classical opera, who has received cultural honors in his home country and also has Grammy awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame… is taking this unprecedented opportunity to fill Milan’s empty cathedral with music on Easter Sunday 2020.

Milan’s Duomo dates back to the 1300’s. It is the largest church in Italy (St. Peter’s Basilica is larger, but it’s in the independent state of Vatican City). That makes it the 2^nd largest in all of Europe. Milan’s Duomo is famous not just for the size of the building, but also for the 225-rank pipe organ which is the biggest in Italy, and for the gold Madonna gazing out onto the city from a perch nearly 360 feet at the top of one of the church’s many spires.

It’s also in the heart of the region of Italy hardest-hit by COVID-19.

Bocelli is making sure everyone’s Easter is filled with uplifting music, singing a solo concert Andrea Bocelli: Music for Hope in the Milan Duomo.

The 61-year old tenor and cathedral organist Emanuele Vianelli will perform soaring hymns like “Ave Maria” and “Sancta Maria” in the dramatic surroundings of the Duomo.

And while the pews in Milan and around the world will be empty, the point of the Music for Hope concert is to “send a message of love, healing and hope to Italy and the world.”

So the Music for Hope will be livestreamed globally HERE on Bocelli’s YouTube channel beginning at 1 pm Eastern Time on Easter Sunday in a gesture the beloved tenor hopes will unite everyone facing the pandemic.

'I believe in the strength of praying together; I believe in the Christian Easter, a universal symbol of rebirth that everyone - whether they are believers or not - truly needs right now,” Bocelli said, “Thanks to music, streamed live, bringing together millions of clasped hands everywhere in the world, we will hug this wounded Earth's pulsing heart.”

He also hopes the concert symbolizes renewal of the society so disrupted by the pandemic. “It will be a joy to witness it, in the Duomo, during the Easter celebration which evokes the mystery of birth and rebirth.”

The Music for Hope concert isn’t the only way Bocelli is contributing. In addition to Sunday’s concert, the Andrea Bocelli Foundation is part of a campaign to purchase more medical equipment needed to treat COVID-19 patients. And the acclaimed tenor also performs on April 18^th’s virtual concert One World: Together at Home, raising money for charities providing food, shelter and healthcare to those in need as a result of the continuing crisis.

But it’s the Music for Hope concert in the hauntingly empty venue of Milan’s Duomo that will uplift the world on Easter Sunday.

And inspire us to think of happy days when we can once again travel to experience the gifts of Italian culture in person.

That Time Mr. Bacardi Told Us About His Family Rum - And How To Make Bacardi's Original Daiquiri

You know the rum, but do you know the story? Bacardi is the world’s most famous rum, but it’s also the largest private, family-owned spirits company in the world.

When the first Bacardi traveled from Spain to Cuba in the early 1800’s, he tasted a raw local spirit made from sugar cane. Recognizing the potential, the wine merchant worked to refine rum. Bacardi eventually identified a proprietary strain of yeast that brought out rum’s best flavors, began filtering rum through charcoal, and ageing it in white oak barrels that mellowed and enriched the final result. It was the first ‘white’ (clear) rum in the world.

The rest, as they say, is history. The origins of the instantly-recognizable logo inspired by the ‘lucky’ colony of bats in the building where the Bacardi family began commercial production in Cuba, making rum cocktails like Cuba Libres, Mojitos and Daiquiris part of the early 20^th century cocktail party craze, relocating Bacardi production to Puerto Rico following the Cuban revolution in 1960…

The story of Bacardi is legendary. And visitors to the House of Bacardi in Puerto Rico (called ‘The Cathedral of Rum’), with its mid-century, stylized ‘bat wing’ pavilion is so much more than a distillery visit.

Bacardi’s Original Recipe: A Hand-shaken Daiquiri

Rum, lime and sugar are timeless ingredients in the Caribbean. The origins of this classic cocktail go back to an engineer in Cuba who developed its refreshing taste, and the Bacardi family's epic parties made it famous stateside, then around the world.

Bacardi's classic Daiquiri is a perfect blend of BACARDÍ Carta Blanca rum, the crispness of fruit and the sweetness of sugar. Serve ice cold for a refreshing drink on a hot day in the islands... or for cocktail hour at home dreaming of your next trip to the Caribbean.

THE INGREDIENTS

2 ounces BACARDÍ Carta Blanca Rum
1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
2 tsp Sugar

THE METHOD

Place sugar and freshly pressed lime juice into a cocktail shaker and stir until the sugar has dissolved.
Then pour in the BACARDÍ Carta Blanca rum and fill the shaker with half-cubed ice, followed by some half-crushed ice.
Place the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously until thoroughly chilled.
Finally, strain through a fine tea strainer into a chilled coupette.

The Whale Shark Whisperer of Cabo

It’s a paradise where Mexico’s Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific. Los Cabos has become synonymous with a chic coastal retreat for Hollywood celebrities and global jetsetters.

The southern tip of the Baja Peninsula teems with luxury beachside resorts and spas, where stylish people relax, go golfing, horseback riding, and dancing til dawn.

But Cabo is first and foremost about the sea. Its signature landmark is the Arch rock formation rising from the ocean at the ‘End of the World’, and water-based activities like kayaking and paddle boarding, snorkeling and diving dominate the holiday lifestyle.

Cabo is the launching pad for visits to the area of Cabo Pulmo, Mexico’s protected National Marine Park known as “The Aquarium of the World”, and its most famous resident, enormous whale sharks.

They’re called ‘sharks’, but these ‘Gentle Giants’ are slow-moving filter feeders completely harmless to humans. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the seas, growing to more than 30 feet and 20,000 pounds, making them far and away the largest non-mammal creature alive.

Any glimpse of a whale shark in the wild is magnificent. But in Cabo, visitors can join tours that allow you to swim among these breathtaking creatures. Cabo’s whale shark viewing season runs October through April, and it’s an experience you’ll never forget.

We asked Los Cabos diver and expert whale shark tour guide Oliver Hernandez what it’s like to swim with these gentle giants.

How long have you been swimming with the whale sharks?

“My first season swimming with the sharks was in 2013. I had been working with Cabo Adventures as a guide for a number of other tours since I moved to Los Cabos in 2008. I’ve loved the water since childhood, so that type of tour was a natural fit for me. When I learned that there were whale shark tours operating out here, I knew I had to apply to become a tour guide.”

You have a job that a lot of people likely envy. What amazes you most about what you do?

“I feel extremely lucky to be able to swim with these incredible animals. It’s truly a mind-blowing experience. The very first sighting of a whale shark in our waters was only in 2006, and many people had no idea that a swimming excursion with them was even an option. In my first season, we only had tours every third day with maybe eight guests. Of course, it exploded in popularity rapidly and we quickly had to develop a system to avoid disturbing the sharks. Today, you may be on a waitlist for a tour because we cap it at 14 boats in the water at a time to ensure the sharks remain comfortable. I’m proud of how we moved quickly to accommodate the sudden increase in demand while still remaining respectful of the needs of the wildlife.”

How has the marine tour industry and its protocols evolved?

I’ve personally witnessed many changes in my time here, and all of them have been for the better. There have been different rules and restrictions in place over the years and all of them have been guided by the desire to provide the best experience possible for the guests and the animals. I feel confident and proud in saying that Los Cabos takes the utmost caution to tour the waters respectfully and cultivate a love for the sharks. I feel that, since our inception, we have demonstrated respect and care for this species and that is an amazing thing.”

You work with whale sharks almost every single day. What’s the most important or interesting thing you’ve learned about them?

“The most important thing for me, when dealing with any species in the ocean, is care and perseverance. It is important to respect the ocean’s wildlife, and I think that doing so has helped to maintain that sense of wonder I get every time I dive in. Unlike in say a zoo, these animals are not here for us to look at: we are entering their home and humbly requesting an audience with them. We should always feel grateful for the opportunity to interact with these creatures in their habitat.”

What’s the secret for consistently finding these breathtaking animals and introducing them to the guests?

“It’s all about teamwork. The captain, Jorge, seems to instinctively know exactly where to position the boat. As guides, we are in the water simultaneously watching the position of every guest and every shark. On days where it’s proving difficult to spot them, we manage to approximate their location by reading the flow of the waves and the ‘trail’ they leave in the water as they swim. As the captain spots from the boat, he relays what he sees to the guides and gets us moving in the right direction. “

Although whale sharks are docile filter feeders, there are definitely people out there who will have reservations about swimming with any kind of shark. What would you tell a guest who might be feeling a bit hesitant to get in the water with them?

“The good news is that unless you are plankton, you aren’t on the menu. Whale sharks are gentle and will show respect as long as their space is respected. We encourage guests not to impede their movements and to stay out of their way so they feel relaxed. When in the water with any species, the key is always to blend in. Once you jump into the water or start splashing around wildly, the whale sharks can feel the vibrations and motions of the water and they are bound to take off rather than approach. The key to having a good experience with the animals is just to be calm and don’t interfere with wildlife. Whether it’s whale sharks, dolphins, or hammerheads, they will respond by remaining calm as well.”

What are some of your most memorable moments while leading a tour?

“We had a guest once who was swimming and was grazed by a whale shark. Whale shark skin feels like sandpaper, so she had a big shock. At times, when there are many whale sharks in the water, you have to become a matador. One time I was following along with the group and I felt a presence next to me, so I turned around and found myself staring into the huge open mouth of a whale shark coming towards me. I had to roll myself like a tortilla and I was just floating along the surface while the whale shark passed, the fin gliding right between my legs. It can happen more than once because the whale sharks are everywhere. That’s what makes the experience so fun.”

Cruise Company Offers Ships as Floating Hospitals During COVID-19

For some members of this family of cruise lines, serving during great times of need is part of the company DNA.

Carnival Corporation’s family of cruise lines includes some of the world’s most historic, like the British luxury line Cunard and also Holland America Line.

History of Service

Holland America’s roots go back to the 1870’s as a shipping and passenger line providing service across the North Atlantic from Rotterdam to New York City. By the turn of the century the company had already transported 400,000 people from Europe to a new life in America.

It launched its first vacation cruise as early as 1895, but as conflicts arose in the 20^th century, the cruise line - known for its fleet of ‘dam’ ships (all named in words ending in ‘dam’) - answered the call.

During the First World War, Holland America’s Ryndam converted from ocean liner to transport for the US Navy.

Just over 20 years later, the original Nieuw Amsterdam sailed half a million miles, transporting close to half a million military personnel during WW2. A sister ship berthed in England served as the seat of the displaced Dutch government. Of 25 HAL ships in existence at the start of the Second World War, only 9 remained when it was over.

Holland America Line isn’t the only modern cruise line with a pedigree of service during international crisis.

Cunard’s service record has even more entries. The British luxury line, founded in 1839 by Canadian Sir Samuel Cunard with a contract to carry British Royal Mail to the US and Canada, has had ships answering the call to serve Great Britain and its allies in every conflict from Crimea in the 1850’s through to the Gulf War in the 1990’s.

Imagine: one Cunard ship carried all of the 7500 horses that charged with the Light Brigade – 200 at a time. Others served as troop transports, store ships… and hospital ships from Crimea onwards.

In the First World War, Cunard ships sailed 3.5 million miles in war service, carrying 9 million tons of food, munitions and cargo, and transporting a million troops. And it was a Cunard ship, the fateful flagship Lusitania, full of 1200 innocent passengers, including Americans, that was torpedoed in 1915, hastening American entry into the First World War.

Less than 30 years later, American GI’s traveled to Europe in World War 2 on Cunard’s original Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth ships. Their success in getting past German U-boats was only one of countless unimaginable feats of maritime service. On one such voyage, the Queen Mary carried over 16,000 troops, sleeping in shifts – a record that has never since been broken. And three times, the same Cunard ship was the epicenter of Britain’s war effort as Sir Winston Churchill crossed the Atlantic en route to confer with US President Roosevelt.

More recently, the current QE2 would serve during the Falklands campaign, with swimming pools converted to the world’s most hazardous helicopter landing zones.

Hospital Ships in the Time of COVID-19

So there is a long-established precedent for cruise lines to come to their country’s aid during times of great need.

And this month, Carnival Corporation announced that select ships from its family of cruise lines, including Holland America Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and P&O Cruises Australia would be available to port communities for use as temporary hospitals during the COVID-10 pandemic.

The initiative would convert and provision ships to provide up to 1000 hospital beds and all non-medical support staff for less-critical, non-COVID-19 patient beds to allow land-based hospitals to free up space for patients with the virus.

These temporary cruise ship hospital rooms, complete with bathroom facilities and private balconies with access to sun and fresh air, as well as isolation, can be quickly installed with cardiac, respiratory, oxygen and video patient monitoring capabilities over the ship's high-speed network. They can also provide more than half a dozen intensive care units in ships’ medical centers.

Carnival Corporation is not alone. MSC Group has already converted a ferry into a hospital ship and delivered it to Genoa, where it will take in patients recovering from COVID-19 in one of the hardest-hit regions of Italy.

COVID-19 continues the cruise industry’s long tradition of stepping forward to serve in times of global crisis.

Travel Gives Back

There are so many examples of travel companies giving back on a regular basis to the communities their guests visit.

The Red Carnation Hotel Collection helps train and find places for vulnerable women to work in hospitality. (Pictured, top: President and Founder Beatrice Tollman sharing her passion for hospitality). The hotel company also recycles and repurposes unused hotel toiletries to benefit women in need. And they work with Canadian charity ME to WE’s fairtrade chocolate program to promote workers’ rights and support clean water initiatives for families.

So guests in Red Carnation hotels – including the famous and arguably most popular castle hotel in Ireland, Ashford Castle (pictured) – know they are supporting women around the world in addition to enjoying a memorable vacation.

The social enterprise gives local women in a region where the largest concentration of land mines remain in the world dignified work at home. Once they started working with the community, Globus realized another vital need in the community and partnered to build and operate a school for the region’s children.

And there are countless other examples, too.

Travel Industry Being Part of the Solution During COVID

From China to Europe, hotels opened their arms to provide safe, comfortable and convenient homes away from home for overworked, stressed medical staff on the front lines of fighting the virus. 40 Accor hotels in France alone were dedicated to nursing staff and vulnerable populations.

And it’s happening closer to home, too. The governor of New York just tweeted out thanks to the Four Seasons Hotel New York, which opened its doors on 57^th Street (pictured) to that city’s medical personnel.

During this crisis, the travel community has stepped up, with local attractions to global companies coming to the aid of their communities to help support their efforts to fight the pandemic.

Generous COVID-19 Cancellation Policies

Travel companies are showing generosity to their guests, too.

Travel suppliers, from tour companies to cruise lines to hotels have gone out of their way during COVID-19 to implement new cancellation policies that ensure travelers get all of their money back – and sometimes extras – if they can’t travel. We’ve never seen such generous policies, and they give you peace of mind.

The new policies are so good that travelers with booked travel are better off rescheduling, not canceling, and having those benefits applied to new dates. That’s great news as it means people will be able to keep traveling.

The Show Will Go On

It’s not just individual trips being rescheduled. This year has a full calendar of memory-making travel events, and the good news is: it looks like we aren’t going to miss out.

You’ve likely already heard the Tokyo Olympics will go on, just one year later, and the communities and organizers of other one-time or annual events are showing their resilience and shifting to a new timeline.

It gives us so many happy events around the world to look forward to when we all get back to traveling.

DoubleTree cookies have a long history and - no surprise - an avid fan following. More than 30 million cookies are eaten every year, and copycat recipes have been circulating on the internet.

They are also the first cookies baked in space! The hotel chain partnered provided the recipe for its world-renowned cookies to test cooking equipment for space on the International Space Station.

Travel on earth may be grounded. But now, DoubleTree by Hilton’s beloved cookies can continue to put smiles on faces. For the first time, they’re sharing the official bake-at-home recipe for the chocolate chip cookie so at-home bakers can create the warm and comforting treat in our own kitchens.

“We know this is an anxious time for everyone,” said a spokesperson for DoubleTree by Hilton. “A warm chocolate chip cookie can’t solve everything, but it can bring a moment of comfort and happiness.”

DoubleTree Signature Cookie Recipe

Makes 26 cookies

½ pound / 225 grams butter, softened (2 sticks)

¾ cup + 1 tablespoon / 165 grams granulated sugar

¾ cup packed / 150 grams light brown sugar

2 large eggs

1 ¼ teaspoons / 6.25 mL vanilla extract

¼ teaspoon / 1.25 mL freshly squeezed lemon juice

2 ¼ cups / 280 grams flour

1/2 cup / 45 grams rolled oats

1 teaspoon / 6 grams baking soda

1 teaspoon / 6 grams salt

Pinch cinnamon

2 2/3 cups / 465 grams semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 3/4 cups / 220 grams chopped walnuts

Cream butter, sugar and brown sugar in the bowl of a stand mixer on medium speed for about 2 minutes.
Add eggs, vanilla and lemon juice, blending with mixer on low speed for 30 seconds, then medium speed for about 2 minutes, or until light and fluffy, scraping down bowl.
With mixer on low speed, add flour, oats, baking soda, salt and cinnamon, blending for about 45 seconds. Don’t overmix.
Remove bowl from mixer and stir in chocolate chips and walnuts.
Portion dough with a scoop (about 3 tablespoons) onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper about 2 inches apart.
Preheat oven to 300°F.
Bake for 20 to 23 minutes, or until edges are golden brown and center is still soft.
Remove from oven and cool on baking sheet for about 1 hour.

4 Places to Commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE Day

2020 likely marks the last major milestone anniversaries for the Second World War with living members of the Greatest Generation.

May 8^th is the 75^th anniversary of VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day.

The day was marked at the time by a spontaneous eruption of joy throughout the streets of London after years of losses under siege and aerial bombardment by the Nazis. Images sent around the world of partying crowds, Churchill and the Royal Family waving from the balcony of Buckingham Palace remain among the most iconic images of 20^th century history. (VJ Day in the Pacific theatre, came a few months later).

Plans for dramatic and ceremonial remembrances of VE Day’s 75^th anniversary have been stymied by the COVID pandemic. Instead the Queen, who as a very young woman during the War served in uniform as a mechanic, is issuing a rare televised address with her personal memories. In a very moving tribute, a national singalong is also planned with people standing in their yards and doorways and balconies joining to sing the unofficial anthem of British pluck during WW2, Vera Lynn’s ‘We’ll Meet Again’ with Dame Vera Lynn herself leading from a window at her home.

North American history buffs or remembering family and community members who contributed to the defeat of the Nazis have had their travel plans to VE Day commemorations cancelled.

The Soldiers:

D-Day Landing Beaches, Normandy, France

Before there was VE Day, 11 months earlier, there was D-Day: June 6, 1944.

A fabled event in military history, D-Day was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Operation Overlord achieved the extraordinary feat of landing 24,000 Allied soldiers to re-take the Nazi-fortified beaches of France. It was the beginning of the liberation of Europe that ended on VE Day.

Canada's Juno Beach, Britain's Sword and Gold Beaches, and America's Omaha and Utah Beaches remain an essential travel destination to honor, first-hand, the monumental task and tremendous sacrifices of D-Day, and walk in the very footsteps of the soldiers who landed there. The isolated D-Day Landing Beaches (above and top) with cliffs, restored battlefield sites, museums and oh, so many cemetaries are essential travel destinations.

The Leaders:

Churchill War Rooms, London

Of all the political and military leaders who strove together towards victory, Sir Winston Churchill remains legendary. The British Prime Minister was one of the earliest leaders to resolve to defeat Nazism, and his eloquent speeches (still often quoted today) and steadfast refusal to give up hope famously rallied the British and Allies to victory.

Nazi planes flew nightly over the English Channel to bomb the capital, and Londoners blacked out the city and retreated underground. Thousands spent nights in London’s ‘tube’ stations. The government went underground, too, into a complex underneath the Treasury building in Whitehall. Knowing what was coming, construction on the War Rooms began in 1938. Operations there began just a week before the war began, and the lights weren’t turned off for the next six years until the war was over.

Today’s fascinating and evocative Churchill War Rooms museum includes restored government wartime command center and a museum devoted to Churchill’s life.

The Victims:

Anne Frank House, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Of the millions of military casualties and civilian victims, the diary of Anne Frank remains the most famous personal story, and the young girl herself remains the symbol of the over one million Jewish Europeans exterminated by the Nazis.

Anne Frank House preserves the tiny suite of rooms in central Amsterdam where Anne, her parents and sister and four other people hid behind a bookshelf for over two years in fear of capture by Nazi occupiers.

Not long before the liberation of the Netherlands, the group was discovered and Anne was sent to a concentration camp where she died. Her diary of her life in hiding was saved and published, and ensured her voice and story and the lessons of the Holocaust continue through the ages.

The gripping and emotional museum features the life and times of Anne Frank and the dangers of persecution and intolerance.

The Home Front:
